"Hey Dr. Gerlein! What's the deal with retainers?"

If you recently completed treatment at Gerlein Orthodontics, we’d like to congratulate you! Now that your braces have been removed, Dr. Gerlein will provide—or has provided you at this point—with your own set of retainers.

After braces are removed, your teeth may shift out of position if they are not stabilized. Our team at Gerlein Orthodontics, however, will always tell you that retainers help provide that stabilization. They are designed to hold teeth in their corrected, ideal positions until the bones and gums adapt to the treatment changes.

Wearing retainers exactly as instructed by Dr. Gerlein is the best insurance that the treatment improvements last for a lifetime. To learn more about the advantages of wearing retainers after your orthodontic treatment with Dr. Gerlein, please read this helpful article about retainers from KidsHealth. You may also give us a call!

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!!

Happy Halloween from Gerlein Orthodontics!

happy halloween Pictures, Images and Photos

As Halloween nears closer and closer, our staff at Gerlein Orthodontics know a lot parents here in Chevy Chase are worried about their kids going overboard on candies this weekend.

All those sweet, sour and sticky candies may taste great, but these treats are known to damage teeth, as well as braces! Did you know sour candies can be acidic to your teeth, and actually wear down the enamel that protects them? This can cause tooth decay and cavities! In addition, we also want your child to steer clear of sticky, chewy, gummy and nutty goodies.

Our friends at the American Association of Orthodontists recommend softer treats, such as soft chocolate or peanut butter cups, or melt-in-your-mouth foods. Trick-or-treaters who indulge should make sure they brush and floss between teeth, around brackets and at the gum line. If damage occurs, call Dr. Gerlein as soon as possible.

We hope everyone has a fun, safe and scary Halloween!

How do we reward our patients at Gerlein Orthodontics?

At Gerlein Orthodontics we offer a Rewards Program that encourages and makes young patients eager to come for their visits. When they come in, they can accumulate points for good oral hygiene, brushing their teeth before the appointment, having nothing broken or loose and other things so they can receive a gift card of their choice when they reach a certain amount of points.

We also allow patients to use their iPods while they are waiting or in the chair for a long procedure. Another thing we do to make young patients visits’ more exciting is having a monthly contest where kids can win a prize at the end of the month. Last month, we had patients design a potential T-shirt for our office, and for October we are having them guess the weight of a pumpkin, and the winner will receive 4 movie passes to a movie of their choice.

Straight talk with Dr. Gerlein

People ask our staff at Gerlein Orthodontics why we work so tirelessly to give our patients straight teeth. Of course it’s great to have a smile full of evenly-aligned teeth, but did you know that straightening your teeth at our Chevy Chase office can keep them healthier? Straight teeth lead to better oral hygiene, increasing your chances of keeping your own natural teeth for a lifetime!

Straight teeth are less prone to decay, because they collect less plaque—the sticky colorless substance that forms on our teeth and leads to tooth decay; and they are easier to keep clean! If you’re wondering whether your teeth might cause problems because they are out of alignment, please give us a call at (301) 951-4114 to set up a consultation. Dr. Eduardo Gerlein can help you decide whether or not you will benefit from orthodontic treatment.

We've made it our priority to help keep our great town smiling! Our practice utilizes the newest, state-of-the-art technology to give our patients the top-notch, quality care they deserve.

At Gerlein Orthodontics, rewards for keeping your braces in tip-top shape!

Dr. Gerlein and team know how difficult it can be to get patients, especially the young ones, to take good care of their teeth between visits during their orthodontic treatment.

At Dr. Gerlein’s Orthodontics there are several ways we encourage our young patients to take good care of their teeth between visits to our Chevy Chase office.

We have a point rewarding system in which kids can accumulate points by doing things such as brushing their teeth in the office before they are seen, and for great oral hygiene and having no broken or loose bands or wires.

Another way we promote good oral hygiene between visits is offering Sonicare toothbrushes to purchase through our office.

Be sure to ask Dr. Gerlein or one of our team members during your next visit!

At Gerlein Orthodontics, October is National Orthodontic Health Month!

October is National Orthodontic Health Month, and we wanted to remind our patients at Gerlein Orthodontics to be extra careful when they bite into their treats.

Remember, caramels, taffy, nuts, chewing gum, popcorn kernels, suckers or sticky, chewy and hard candy are foods you should be avoiding this Halloween Season! Indulging in these foods can break your braces and lengthen your treatment time!

Of course, Halloween doesn’t have to be completely treat-less. Plain chocolate candy should be fine, as long as you remember to brush afterward!

Lastly, we are having a "guess the weight of the pumpkin contest" this month, and will be having a candy buy back next month.

See you soon!

Braces Q&A with Dr. Gerlein

It might seem crazy, but there are so many rumors out there about what’s good for your teeth, what’s bad for your teeth, why it's so important to have straight teeth, when you should schedule a consultation at Gerlein Orthodontics, and so on. Below are are answers to some of the most frequent questions Dr. Eduardo Gerlein thought he'd answer about braces.

Q: Why is it so important to have straight teeth?

A: It is very important to have straight teeth. Teeth that are straight usually allow people to chew and speak better and they also contribute to healthy teeth and gums. Properly aligned teeth and jaws may alleviate or prevent physical health problems. Teeth that work better also tend to look better so after having teeth straightened the smile looks much, much nicer and as you know, an attractive smile is a wonderful asset.

Q: When should people call for a consultation?

A: Anytime is a good time for an orthodontic consultation. If your dentist recommends an orthodontic evaluation, if you want to study options for your smile or simply want to learn about what orthodontics can do for you, you are welcome to come and visit us. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that every child have an orthodontic consultation by age 7.

Q: What should patients avoid eating while undergoing orthodontic treatment?

A: At this time of the year, when there’s plenty of candy around, we tend to see a lot of broken braces. Make sure you avoid hard, sticky foods that can damage the brackets or wires. If you feel like candy, enjoy a chocolate bar or an ice cream but don’t bite into any of those hard caramels, jolly ranchers, tootsie rolls, etc.

We hope you found this informational! Happy Tuesday!

Gerlein Orthodontics at the Taste of Friendship Heights

Our staff will be at the Taste of Friendship Heights this upcoming Saturday, from 12-5pm. The event is a celebration of community and cuisine and will include great food from local restaurants, live music, a moon bounce, face painting, balloon sculptures and much more.

We hope you join us on Saturday!

Lastly, Dr. Gerlein and our staff came across an interesting fact last week: Did you know Chevy Chase, MD got its name because of a land dispute? "Chevauchée" was a French word describing a border raid and "chace" was a hunting ground.

Interesting!

Dr. Eduardo Gerlein, reminding you to wear your mouth guard this summer

Summer is officially here for only three more full weeks, which means it's a great time for Dr. Eduardo Gerlein and our staff to remind our patients (especially you athletes) to take care of both your mouth and appliances while participating in contact sports (and non-contact sports) this fall. Let's face it, this is a busy time of year sports-wise, whether you're playing baseball in the park or getting serious about high school football.

Dr. Gerlein wants you to know that only by using a mouth guard can athletes with and without braces avoid serious sports injuries. So, the next time you're in for a visit at our convenient Chevy Chase office, we encourage you to ask Dr. Gerlein for a mouth guard, and we will provide one!

Back to school with Gerlein Orthodontics

Now that many of the schools here in Chevy Chase are back in session, Dr. Gerlein and our staff would like to take this time to remind all our patients about the importance of scheduling fall appointments in advance.

With school, clubs, sports and family/social functions to consider, we know that it can be challenging to find time to visit Gerlein Orthodontics this fall. In order to accommodate all of our patients' busy schedules, it is important that you plan ahead for your appointments so that we are able to provide you with an appointment time that is convenient for you. As always, please remember to give us advanced notice if you're unable to make your regularly-scheduled appointment. If we receive enough notice, we might be able to schedule another patient for that time. Feel free to give us a call at (301) 951-4114 if you have any questions, or if you would like to schedule your fall appointment.

We look forward to seeing you soon!

Is Invisalign really customized for each patient?

You bet, and that's part of what makes it work, says Dr. Gerlein. To find out if you are the right candidate for Invisalign treatment, the first thing we do is to take an impression of your teeth as they are now and digitize it. Using special software, we look at the current positioning of your teeth and compare it to the way your teeth should look.

Next we use special software to map out the exact path your teeth will take from the beginning of your treatment to the end. Based on the results, a set of custom aligners are created just for your teeth. Throughout the course of treatment, you will be required to wear these clear, removable aligners one at a time; each one moving your teeth closer and closer to their final, perfectly aligned position. The best thing about it all? Nobody around you will even know you are wearing braces!

Dr. Gerlein is a Premier Invisalign Provider here in Chevy Chase and surrounding areas. If you have questions about Invisalign, or would like to find out if you are a candidate for Invisalign treatment, please give us a call at (301) 951-4114 or visit our website.

Ask Dr. Gerlein: What's so cool about braces?

Braces today are “cool” and dare we say, “fun!” These were among the findings of a 2010 nationwide survey of moms whose children are going through or have had orthodontic treatment recently. New technologies such as Invisalign and iBraces, advanced computer software, color options, and even popular celebrities sporting stylish braces are making orthodontic treatment more comfortable, fashionable and cool for today’s teens.

The study, conducted on behalf of the American Association of Orthodontists, or the AAO, found 86 percent of moms reporting that braces are cooler today than when they were children. Sixty-nine percent of moms also said wearing braces makes their children feel cool, and 81 percent reported their children’s experience with orthodontic treatment as either positive or extremely positive.

Different color options and the ability to change colors, for example, provide exciting ways for young patients to customize appearances. That enthusiasm helps them to feel good about their orthodontic treatment with Dr. Eduardo Gerlein, and may contribute to the success of treatment.

Has your child visited Gerlein Orthodontics for a consultation? If not, please give us a call at (301) 951-4114 and let us help your child begin the journey to a gorgeous smile!
